What is Praise?

Text: Psalm 150: 6
•       Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
•       If everything that has breath has to praise the Lord, it is essential to understand what is meant by praise
•       We cannot do things in the right way without fully understanding its meaning and significance
•       It must be so special that God come and inhabit to those who praise Him
•       Let us see some verses regarding praise
•       Psalm 117: 1
•       Praise the Lord, all you nations;
    extol him, all you peoples.
•       1 Chronicles 29: (NIV)
•       20 Then David said to the whole assembly, “Praise the Lord your God.” So they all praised the Lord, the God of their fathers; they bowed down, prostrating themselves before the Lord and the king.
•       to say or write good things about (someone or something)
•       to express approval of (someone or something)
•        to express thanks to or love and respect for (God)
•       to express a favorable judgment of-  commend
•       Glorifying especially by crediting with perfections
•       To commend someone is to entrust for care or preservation
•       To recommend as worthy of confidence or notice
•       Praising God by commendation thus means that we entrust ourselves to His care and recommend that others do the same
•       Psalm 7:1 O Lord my God, in You I put my trust; Save me from all those who persecute me; And deliver me,
•       Psalm 16:1 Preserve me, O God, for in You I put my trust. KJV
•       Psalm 20:7 Some trust in chariots, and some in horses;
But we will remember the name of the Lord our God.
•       Praise by commendation thus applies the promises of God to our personal circumstances
•       Ex. A father who lost his job and is concerned for the needs of his family
•       Lord God, You are my provider. I praise You, for I know that You care for me and my family. You are the God who cares even for the sparrows, and I know that my wife, my children, and I are worth much more to You than the sparrows are. Therefore I choose not to worry. Instead I will boast of Your goodness to us in the past, for there have been other times, Father God, when we didn’t know how we were going to pay our bills. Yet, You have always
Made a way, even when there seemed to be no way. Thank You for Your goodness. Thank You for Your care and provision. I know that I can trust in You. I know that Your eyes are on my family and You will not forget us. Even as You provided food for Your people as they wandered in the wilderness, today I declare by faith that You will provide for us too. You alone are my refuge. I choose not to be shaken by fear. You alone are the source of all I have and ever hope to have…..
•       To approve of someone is to have or express favourable opinion of him or to show esteem
•       Personal experience is at the heart of this expression of praise as well
•       Psalm 10:14 But You have seen, for You observe trouble and grief, To repay it by Your hand. The helpless commits himself to You; You are the helper of the fatherless.
•       Psalm 59:16 But I will sing of Your power;
Yes, I will sing aloud of Your mercy in the morning;
For You have been my defense
And refuge in the day of my trouble.
•       Psalm 63:1 O God, You are my God;
Early will I seek You;
My soul thirsts for You;
My flesh longs for You
In a dry and thirsty land
Where there is no water.
•       2  So I have looked for You in the sanctuary,
To see Your power and Your glory.
•       Praise by approving is turning our thoughts toward God and remembering how He has won our acclaim.
•       Its reciting the wonder of who He is and how He has made a difference in our life and the life of others.
•       Psalm 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
•       It encourages you, the worshiper, to see and celebrate God’s personal care shown in your life and to express your adoration and gratitude to God for His goodness to you.
•       To do this you might read and recite a line from the Psalm and then praise God for how it’s been true in your life
•       The Lord is my Shepherd…My God, You are an awesome God. Even
 before I was born, You had plan for my life.
•       You are the Alpha and Omega who sees my tomorrows when I can’t face today. You are the faithful one who seeks Your sheep even when I wander from the paths You have chosen for me. You are the tender One who comforts me when I am sad or lonely and heals me when I am hurt. You are the forgiving one who look beyond my failures….
•       To glorify someone is to honor, praise, or admiration
•       Giving glory to someone specifically identifies what is admirable in the person
•       Psalm 34:8 Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good;
Blessed is the man who trusts in Him!
•       God is recognized as being good
•       Psalm 11:7 For the Lord is righteous,
He loves righteousness;
His countenance beholds the upright.
•       Daniel 9:9 To the Lord our God belong mercy and forgiveness, though we have rebelled against Him.
•       In addition, God, His dwelling place, His law, His character, His actions are described as being perfect and flawless
•       Psalm 19:7 The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul;
The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple
•       Isaiah 25:1 O Lord, You are my God.
I will exalt You,
I will praise Your name,
For You have done wonderful things;Your counsels of old are faithfulness and truth.
•       Psalm 103 for example
•       Praising God by glorifying is simply recognizing and testifying to all these admirable qualities of God
•       Praise is always turning our attention from ourselves to God
•       It’s remembering and recounting who He is and what He has done, instead of wallowing in the mire of self-absorption
•       Truly we are incredibly self-centerd people
•       Our first thought is always how something or someone is affecting us
•       Praise turns our eyes from ourselves to God
•       `it focuses our thoughts on His majesty and power and invites others to do the same.
•       Praise is bragging about God isntead of about ourselves or the idols of this world
•       It’s celebrating who He is and how He relates to His people
•       There is no reason to have a meeting if praise and worship are not the central focus of our time together
•       We may call our collection of traditions, habits, and activities “worship”, but we have no hope of worshiping God if we are not willing to first give Him the praise that is His due.
•       People who praise God on a regular basis do so because they have the Lord to be altogether lovely that they can’t stop thinking of Him and talking of Him.
•       They have gotten close enough to Him to see His true nature and character, and they  have found in
•       Him more than everything they have hoped for.
•       Praise may start with what you know about God but progress to what you yourself have experienced.
•       This is when praise becomes more than a chore or a duty
•       You don’t have to work up your praise, because it automatically bubbles from within you
•       Praise the flows from a deep relationship with God is genuine and true
•       Your words and acts of adoration arise naturally from your heart
•       This does not mean you will always feel like praising
•       In truth, this does not matter
•       When your relationship with God is deep and lasting, praise comes  no matter what you are experiencing, because how you feel does not change who God is in your life.
•       Praise is an act of your will
•       When you offer God true praise, you make a conscious decision to commend, approve, and glorify Him
•       I is not based on your emotions or feelings
•       You can focus on what is right-God and His goodness to you- no matter what else is wrong
•       Ex. Psalm 42
•       Don’t let your troubles keep you from praising God
•       You might be facing hardships, He knows you are hurting, He also knows things won’t always be the ay they are now
•       In fact He is waiting to act on your behalf, but He needs you to provide a dwelling place for Him, an altar in your life where He can show up. Praise is that altar.
•       Ex 15:2 The Lord is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation;
He is my God, and I will praise Him;
My father’s God, and I will exalt Him.
•       Psalm 13:6 I will sing to the Lord,
Because He has dealt bountifully with me.
•       Psalm 28:7 The Lord is my strength and my shield;
My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped;
Therefore my heart greatly rejoices,
And with my song I will praise Him.
•       Although “will” indicate a future time, it can also speak of a conscious choice
•       In other words, I am determined to praise God
•       This is what the Scriptures call a sacrifice or offering of praise
•       I will freely sacrifice to You;
I will praise Your name, O Lord, for it is good.
•       Complaining accomplishes nothing more than to further drain our strength
•       Don’t wait for things to go right before you start praising
•       The more you notice Hi and His benefits to you, the more He will bless you and give you more reasons to praise Him.
•       Faith without works is dead
•       Likewise, praise that is in the heart but is not expressed is dead
•       Therefore, faith is the highest act of praise, and praise is the highest form of faith
•       When you praise Him, you proclaim what you know to be true despite the evidence to the contrary.
•       Praise is giving God all that is His due and giving Him room in our life to do all He wants to do.
•       TO OTHERS?
•       Psalm 50: 6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.

Of all the things that we have received, it is a must to praise God for that. He provides us the things that we want even though we do not deserve it. It is Him who can only do things like that. What we just have to do is to praise Him. We do not deserve someone like God. He is everything, but we still commit sins that are against Him. For now, let us focus on doing good and avoid doing bad.

I love learning as I’m sure you do as well. I have learned so much through the worship articles I have found here. Some of us just don’t have the time to read a whole book and so articles are the next best thing. Our culture has been accurately described as, “The culture of narcissism”. This is a very precise portrayal as our society has increasingly become more individualistic. We live in a “me” culture, where people have become more self-absorbed than ever before! Thanks that you have this blog that could remind people not to forget that there is something bigger than themselves. Thanks a lot!

I am really fun of an inspirational blog like this. As a youth, knowing the true essence of praise is really hard to establish. In your blog, you put some bible verse for us to really understand what is your main point. Praising in God, knowing his lessons, and putting him to our heart, mind, and soul can really save us from all the sins and wrong doings. I am hoping that you can post another topic related to this. I am pretty sure that I will visit this site again.
